Methanol, or methyl alcohol, is a liquid that is free from colour, buoyant and volatile. The liquid has a characteristic odour that resembles the smell of ethanol. The liquid is a polar solvent carrying the formula CH3OH (a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group often shortened to MeOH). Methanol attained the name wood alcohol as in the past the alcohol was only produced by the cataclysmic manufacturing of wood. Nowadays, manufacturing is chiefly industrial by hydrogenating carbon monoxide.
Methyl alcohol subsists of a polar hydroxyl group linked to a methyl group. Annually, over 20 million tons are being manufactured. The liquid is a host of more specialised synthetics, as well as a forerunner for several other commodity synthetics like acetic acid, methyl benzoate, formaldehyde, methyl tert-butyl ether, peroxy acids and anisole.
