Methyl Ethyl Ketone, also known as MEK or But one, is a fluid free from colour. The liquid has a sweet swell that resembles the odour of Acetone. The biological compound has the formula CH3C(O)CH2CH3. Industrially, the manufacturing is being conducted on a large scale; however, in nature, this only happens in small amounts. MEK is partially soluble in water and is often used as an industrial solvent. It is an isomer of tetrahydrofuran, which is another solvent.
MEK is mostly used as a low-boiling one for acrylic, nitrocellulose and vinyl surface coatings. These are lacquers and are mostly used in industries that manufacture furniture, automotive and electrical goods.
MEK evaporates relatively quickly, making it interesting for producers of printing inks, tape and industrial cement (could also be based on rubber).
