Butyl Glycol, also known as 2-Butoxyethanol, has the molecular formula BuOC2H4OH (Bu = CH3CH2CH2CH2). Butyl glycol is represented in a liquid state and is a natural compound. The fluid derives from glycol ethers and a butyl ether of ethylene glycol. Its odour is sweet and ether-like. The solvent is relatively cheap and not buoyant. It has the properties of a surfactant and hence, is used in many industrial and domestic products.

With the use of the compound, products like coatings, ink and water-based paint are being formed. The fluid extends the drying time of the products, as well as improves its flow. Moreover, flows of melamine, the solvent, also improve phenolic stoving finishes and urea.
